Fairfax Financial names Gobinath Athappan its new Chairman & CEO of Asia

Canadian financial holding company, Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited has appointed Gobinath Athappan as its new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fairfax Asia.

He will also reportedly be appointed Chairman of Singapore Re after regulatory approval.

The firm stated that Athappan has done an outstanding job during his 23 year tenure with Fairfax and Fairfax Asia. Over this time, Athappan has been the Chief Executive Officer of each of Fairfax’s Falcon Insurance in Hong Kong and Pacific Insurance in Malaysia and has been the Vice-Chairman of Fairfax Asia since 2015.

Prem Watsa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fairfax, commented on the appointment, “Gobi has done an outstanding job for Fairfax and has been an integral part of building Fairfax Asia.

“Gobi brings many years of industry experience and has been an ambassador of the culture of Fairfax. We are very excited for the future of Fairfax Asia under Gobi’s leadership.”

Recently, S&P Global Ratings upgraded Fairfax Financial Holding and its re/insurance subsidiaries, including Odyssey Re and Allied World amongst others, on revised criteria and assigned it a positive outlook.
